Here at AutoNetTV, we have national viewers, like your neighbors in Falconer, who write to us with questions or feedback. One common question we're asked is: "What is a differential and what does it do?" You may have been told by your I-86 Truck Repair & Auto Service service advisor that your differential needs serviced, or it's seen it as an option up on the service menu. Differential service at I-86 Truck Repair & Auto Service covers a lot of things, so let's first talk about what a differential does.As you drive through a turn, your outside wheels and inside wheels turn at different speeds. Kind of like the cars going around a race track - the ones driving in the outside lanes have a greater distance to travel than the cars in the inside lanes. The differential is what allows the outside and inside drive wheels to rotate at slightly different speeds so that the tires don't hop or skip while taking corners, or lose traction ... read more

These days many people in the Falconer area are really committed to making their cars last a long time. First thing: you've got to start with what you've got. It'd be ideal if people started with a brand new car, never missed a scheduled service item, paid attention to the severe service maintenance schedule and had regular inspections. But if you've had the vehicle for a while or bought it used, its maintenance history is what it is; and that's where you start.Go through the maintenance schedule for your vehicle and see what's been done and when. Have your Falconer service advisor at I-86 Truck Repair & Auto Service do an inspection and come up with a list of stuff that needs to be done. Review the list and prioritize the work, talk about budget and make a plan to get caught up.Making a plan is so important. Well, you may be surprised to learn that all but the gummy bears are in the top ten most distracting foods when you are driving. But if you chose 'coffee,' then give yourself an extra two points. Coffee is the number one food distraction for drivers in Falconer and around the country.Food distractions cause 25 percent of all car accidents; over a million and a half each year! You'll notice that all of the top ten distracting food items are messy. Most Falconer drivers don't even think about their air conditioner. Now here's a tip for Falconer vehicle owners: Run your air conditioner every so often during New York winters. This circulates the lubricant to help keep the seals from drying out. The air conditioner actually removes some of the moisture in the air. So if you have trouble with fogging on your vehicle windshield during New York winters or during a rain storm, running the A/C on the defrost setting should help. Now on some Falconer cars you can't run the A/C at the same time as the defroster. Don't ask me why, but I suspect lawyers were involved. Also, air and water can get into the A/C system. That can reduce the efficiency of the system and also lead to corrosion that causes damage. Falconer drivers should periodically purge the system and replace the refrigerant to remove the air and water.New York drivers wou ... read more

The price of gas in New York has got people in Falconer talking. It seems that Falconer folks who need a bigger vehicle to carry family and gear, or provide four wheel drive, are hit especially hard. That is why we thought it would be good to review some things that anyone can do to improve fuel economy. First let's start with how we drive around New York. People in Falconer may not realize that they can really save on gas by just changing a few driving habits. One of the biggest is jackrabbit starts - you know, flooring the gas as soon as the light turns green. That really wastes a lot of fuel. Building up your speed at a slower pace uses less fuel and is easier on your engine and drive train. And don't drive with one foot on the brake. That's also a drag on fuel economy, and it wears out your brakes faster, too. Another thing Falconer drivers can do is drive more slowly - but only when it's safe. Sometimes on the freeway we drive an ... read more

Today in the I-86 Truck Repair & Auto Service auto care blog, we're going to talk to Falconer drivers about oil change intervals. It seems that as engine technology advances, oil change intervals become longer for I-86 Truck Repair & Auto Service customers. For example, recently four of the world's largest vehicle manufacturer's shortened the published intervals for several of their engine models. They originally published intervals that extended out to a much as 8,000 miles (13,000 kilometers). In real world Falconer driving, the oil started to sludge up before the recommended change interval. Oil sludge is a thick jelly-like substance: quite literally petroleum jelly – like Vaseline. This goop was clogging vehicle small engine passages so the oil wouldn't flow to some parts of the engine. This resulted in engine damage. We see it too often at I-86 Truck Repair & Auto Service in Falconer. The vehicle manufacturers began to offer an extended warranty to cover slud ... read more

Like everything in the New York automotive market, there have been great strides in headlight technology in recent years. New York drivers can be safer at night because of it. Good headlights improve visibility on Falconer roads, enabling you to see farther. They also improve your peripheral vision, helping you to see the sides more clearly. The more you can see, the more quickly you can react to road conditions. This is because nearly half of traffic fatalities take place at night. And as Falconer resident population ages, everything that helps older eyes is welcome. Most new vehicles sold in New York come with halogen headlamps. A decade ago, halogens were exotic and expensive. Now that they are standard equipment, the price has come way down. Many luxury cars are equipped with high intensity discharge, or HID, headlamps. You have probably seen them on some Falconer roads; they're very bright and have a bluish tint. From behind the wheel, there is no doubt th ... read more

Modern vehicles in and around Falconer run on 12 volt electrical systems. 12 volts is enough to get the job done for Falconer drivers without having so much power that there is danger of electrocution. But today's vehicles have more electrical components and do-dads than ever before. This really strains your electrical system, making it hard for the battery to keep up. Think about it: electric seats, seat heaters, power locks windows and sun roofs. And then us New York drivers have all the power outlets for our cell phones, computers and DVD players. We also have navigation systems and powerful stereos. Plus there are all the engine and transmission computers, traction control, stability control, anti-lock brakes, sensors and on and on. Even the security system is running off the battery while the car is turned off.Fortunately, battery technology has given Falconer drivers resilient batteries that are able to meet these strenuous requirements. But the fact is, batteries just wear ... read more
