5 Must-Have Teen Auto Skills

Today's message is for inexperienced teenage drivers or brand-new drivers of any age. Even if you don't have your own vehicle, someday you probably will and this is also essential knowledge for using other people's vehicles responsibly.

1. How to check your oil.

Take our word for it, you really, really don't want to drive with low oil. Oil is the lifeblood of your automobile and you are in danger of serious damage to the engine if you don't maintain a sufficient level of lubrication. (You may also risk serious damage to your driving privileges.) Equally important: know how often to change your oil. Dirty oil is also dangerous. If you are responsible for maintaining a car, stop by I-86 Truck & Auto Repair and we will let you know how often to change the oil in your particular automobile, as well as the kind of oil to use. While you are here, we can also show you how to monitor the levels of your car's other vital fluids.

2. How to check tire air pressure.

Wheels and tires are costly. And even if your car's Tire Pressure Monitoring System lists the pressure readings for each tire on one of the dashboard displays, you never know when you will be driving a vehicle without that handy feature.

3. How to change a tire.

Even if you think you aren't mechanically inclined, don't be intimidated by this process. Anyone can learn. The team at I-86 Truck & Auto Repair advises brand-new teen motorists practice a few times in their driveway so they will be able to do it in any situation, such as roadside after sundown in a snowstorm.

4. How to follow maintenance schedules.

The owner's manual outlines the schedules to adhere to for routine maintenance including oil changes which we explained in number one. Other car maintenance services include belt checks, cabin air filter replacement, alignment, and tire rotation and balancing. Since most teenagers are adept at using dozens of social media apps, they may want to download an app to help keep track of scheduled auto maintenance. It may not be as fun as posting a selfie on Instagram, but it will save a lot of dollars on repair costs and keep your car in superb condition.

5. What to do when the check engine light comes on.

The check engine light informs drivers about troubles that range from a loose gas cap to engine misfiring. Every novice motorist should learn what the different check engine light patterns indicate. (e.g. continuous light, quick flickering, steady blinking, etc.)

Thanks for visiting the I-86 Truck & Auto Repair blog. We wish you a lifetime of safe traveling.

Sports are a worldwide source of entertainment. Whether you’re a diehard sports fanatic or someone who cares very little about sports, we’re sure you’ve seen the most famous sports stars around! Famous athletes are seen in television advertisements, on billboards, and in the news. Athletes spend a lot of time traveling and it seems like they’re always on the go, but have you ever wondered what these stars drive around in when they have the time?

Celebrity athletes make mind-boggling amounts of money. With contracts, endorsements, and sponsors, elite professional athletes make tens of millions of dollars per year! When you’re pulling in that kind of income, there isn’t a vehicle in the world you can't afford. Maybe that's why many of these athletes own fleets of cars. Here's a few:

Let’s start with LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers. LeBron’s current basketball contract will pay him over $30,000,000 this year and he has huge endorsements with Nike, Sprite, and many more large businesses.

James' sizeable collection of vehicles consists of a drop-dead gorgeous Ferrari 458, a dazzling Porsche 911 Turbo S, and a posh Rolls Royce Phantom. He has plenty more vehicles that grace his garage but these three are certainly fit for NBA royalty.

Soccer is arguably the most loved sport on the planet and becoming a professional soccer player is the dream of millions. Few could imagine having the skill set of Real Madrid superstar Christiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo’s car collection is almost as mind-blowing as his soccer mastery. He likes to show his fans his vehicles via Instagram. His two newest cars are a $2,000,000 lightning quick Bugatti Veyron SuperSport and a shiny Mercedes Benz GLE AMG 63S. Scroll through his Instagram and you’ll find tons of other automobiles that he’s added to his collection!

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has owned the boxing world for years now, and is currently undefeated (as of the date this post was written). His fabulous boxing skill has led him to earn millions and millions of dollars. Floyd loves spending piles of money on cars. Similar to Ronaldo, you can find most of his autos on his Instagram site. Mayweather owns multiple Rolls Royce, multiple Ferraris, and most impressively, three Bugattis!

His nickname Money Mayweather is certainly apt when it comes to how much money he spends on cars.

There are hundreds of athletes who own amazing cars but getting to all of them could take forever. Next time you have a few minutes, check out your favorite athlete's car collection online! From Raceways to Driveways, Paddle Shifters Go Mainstream

2017-09-12 15:25:11

paddle shifters Falconer

It’s always intriguing for car buffs when an automotive feature or technology exclusive to race cars starts making its way to production cars created for the masses. For example, large aerodynamic spoilers that first appeared on race cars have now been incorporated into street legal autos for years. One innovation that is much less conspicuous is the paddle shifter. If you enjoy driving or the latest auto tech, however, you might want to try them out. What are paddle shifters? Let us explain.

Race car makers are always looking for the next technological advancement so that they can gain an edge over their competitors. While transmissions are regularly upgraded, there are few substantial modifications. For a long time, it was either an automatic or manual transmission. No in-between and no other options. Then race car makers were able to create a semi-automatic transmission. This allowed the driver to use either an automatic gearshift transmission or a manual clutch based transmission in the same automobile.

Since the automatic gear shifter used the main, center console knob, car manufacturers had to think of another spot to put the manual shifters. What better place than behind the steering wheel? This led to the idea of paddle shifters.

When in manual mode, you can use two levers that are usually mounted right behind the steering wheel to control the upshifts and downshifts of the gearbox. This is accomplished by simply pulling them towards you or pushing them away from you.

Semi-automatic transmissions allow drivers to move easily in automatic, yet also give them the option to have a much more engaging driving experience using manual paddle shifters in the same car.

This has now become a marvelous luxury for some drivers. One of the first production cars outfitted with paddle shifters was the Ferrari F355. Paddle shifters took some time to work their way into more models but sports car drivers quickly saw it as a meaningful improvement, prompting automakers such as Porsche, Lamborghini, and Mercedes-Benz to offer paddle shifters in their sports cars.

For quite a while, many paddle shifter devotees thought that supercars were going to be the only vehicles getting paddle shifters. They were wrong, however. Look at the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry-few would put these in the category of sports car. Both 2017 models can be equipped with paddle shifters. And even SUVs such as the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE 63, and Audi SQ5 now provide a variant that includes paddle shifters.

Paddle shifters obviously aren’t meant for every driver, but you’d be surprised at how many vehicles can be decked out with them.

Next time you’re looking into a new car, check and see if it or a similar model is equipped with paddle shifters. You could try them out and experience driving in a whole new way! To experience incomparable automotive service, repair, and diagnostics, call I-86 Truck & Auto Repair at 716-665-2501 to schedule an appointment.

The Few, The Proud, The Cars That Increase in Value

2017-09-05 15:14:43

Have you ever seen a car that seemed absurdly pricey when it first came out and then a few years later you see it being sold for a lot less as a used car? That’s the result of depreciation.

Most cars predictably depreciate at fairly consistent rates. There are a few special cars, however, that have unexpectedly increased in value since being introduced and are now sold for a much higher amount.

Today we’re going to look at some cars that have appreciated or depreciated considerably in the past few years.

Let’s start with a car from the famous German car maker, Porsche. Back in 2004, Porsche established an absolutely incredible supercar called the Carrera GT. It was a breathtaking two seat supercar with an F1 type V10 engine in it! The original price of this car was an extraordinary $440,000 but due to the limited number made, the Carrera GT at once turned into a highly sought-after car. What did that do to the resale value? It skyrocketed!

Check used automobile sales of the Carrera GT and you’ll be lucky if you locate one for less than $600,000. That’s $150,000 over the original list price!

Not all autos maintain their value like the Carrera GT. Unfortunately, most cars drop in value after they're driven off the lot, especially premium luxury sedans. The BMW 7 series and Mercedes-Benz S Class sedans are two of the most exclusive cars out on the road. But their resale values are not. Particularly in 2012, the 7 series had an average list price of $103,000 and the S Class was even higher at $121,000. Look at prices of the 2012 7 Series now and you’ll be able to find used models around $30,000. Do the same for the 2012 S class and you’ll be able to find that car in the $40,000 price range. Great for buyers, bad for sellers.

We’ll end on another vehicle that has appreciated greatly. McLaren hasn’t been making production cars for very long and they don't make a lot, but when they do, they are impressive! They’ve compelled people to notice their cars because of their sporty styling and near-perfect driving dynamics. The McLaren 675LT was their limited production upgrade to their 650S and it got everyone wanting one. Like the Carrera GT, this want factor pushed up the price of the 675LT even though it cost a fortune initially.

The price of the 675LT averaged $345,000 but now you can find the 675LT on sale with prices up to $500,000.

As we know, most autos will shrink in value once they’re driven off the lot, but if you’re able to study the market, you can find a car that won’t depreciate too much. And if you’re lucky enough to be able to purchase a limited production auto, it could turn into a profitable investment!

Whether you drive a Mercedes, Porsche, or Honda, it's always a wise idea to keep up on your scheduled maintenance.

Let I-86 Truck & Auto Repair help you safeguard your investment by delivering the highest level of automotive service in the Jamestown area.

What Do You Think? Car or Truck?

2017-09-05 14:40:36

car vs truck Falconer

Ordinarily, we purchase autos compatible with our needs. Do we need to run children back and forth to school? Or do we need to haul motorcycles and ATVs into the great New York outdoors? Some men and women will always prefer trucks and some will always prefer cars. Let’s discuss a few main points that continue to keep people on either side.

If you were to guess the three top selling vehicles in America in 2016, what would your guess be? My guess would probably be a mid-sized sedan. But it turns out that my speculation would be very wrong.

Did you know that the three best-selling vehicles in America all happen to be trucks?

First is the Ford F-Series, second is the Chevrolet Silverado, and third is the Dodge Ram. So what makes trucks so popular? People love the fact that most full-size pickup trucks now have seating for five which is just as much seating as a family sedan. This makes running errands, going on road trips, and traveling to and from work very simple and just as capable as a car. But the main things that appeal to truck owners is the utility of the bed and the towing ability. There are endless situations when a truck is capable of doing things that a sedan just can’t. Whether it’s schlepping a bunch of moving boxes, scaling a mountain, or towing a boat, a full-size 4WD truck is typically capable of it all and more.

Many outdoor enthusiasts can't imagine life without a truck.

Cars have many advantages as well. One that comes to mind first is the selection and diversity that is available when choosing a car. I can’t think of one automaker that exclusively makes trucks yet there are many manufacturers that don’t have a truck in their lineup. Cars offer a solution for just about anyone. Whether you’re looking for a sports car to zip around in, a luxury sedan for ultimate comfort, or anything in between, there is a vehicle for you.

Most car owners also get to enjoy the gas mileage advantage over their truck counterparts.

The most fuel efficient truck I could find is the Chevrolet Colorado at 25 miles per gallon. Compare that to cars and you'll run across multiple hybrid cars that can get over 50 miles per gallon. There are also models that are now entirely electric. Auto manufacturers generally outfit cars with new technology and features before adding them to trucks.

Cars and trucks each provide their own unique solutions to people’s needs. Are you a car person or a truck person?
